Can you imagine what goes on inside of us when we experience that Germans are once again setting alight our synagogues, desecrating our cemeteries, sending death and bomb threats to our homes?

I'm eager to see how the developer has responded ... so we can focus on those areas where his remedies are weak or inadequate.

Not everything which is legally protected as freedom of opinion is morally and ethically justifiable.

It sounds like we'd be building another building.

It would appear to me this is going to continue. It's not an absolutely easy disease to control. We really can't give anyone a magic bullet to control it or mitigate it. It would not surprise me if we continue to see cases.

This was an event that not only has exceptional meaning for Germany, not only for the Catholic Church, but also for the Jewish community in Germany and in the world. It is a historic day, an event that will be thankfully remembered by future generations.

We are horrified by this attack on innocent people.

Will we respect each other more now? Will we love each other? Words alone are not enough. But we were waiting for a gesture, and this was an important gesture.

If someone told me 45 years ago, 'You are going to be in Cologne, and the pope will visit you in a synagogue,' I wouldn't have believed it. We have come a long way in mutual support and in mutual understanding and, as the pope said, in mutual love.
